Transit Through Delhi & Mumbai Airports — Do You Need a Visa? One-page reference for international passengers

1. Direct International Transit (Staying Airside)

Visa Not Required If:

You are transiting through India on your way to a third country and you:

Remain within the international transit area of the airport (do not clear immigration / do not enter India), and;
Have confirmed onward travel (tickets) to a third destination; and
Your connection is handled by the airline such that you do not have to reclaim and re-check your baggage.

Your ticket is booked under one PNR.

Under these conditions, India does NOT require a visa for transit:

This typically applies to airside transfers where you do not pass through Immigration Control.

2. When a Visa / Entry Is Required

You DO need a visa if:

You must clear Immigration, for example to:

  • Change terminals that require leaving the transit area,

  • Collect and re-check baggage yourself (not through-checked),

  • Leave the airport for a hotel or to explore the city,

  • Have a separate ticket without interline baggage handling.
